How to Beat Your Fear of Video and Build Real Trust Online

Watch: How to Beat Your Fear of Video & Build Trust Online Fast!

Most business owners are terrified of video. Not because they lack the skill, but because they are human, and humans fear being judged.

In an age where AI generated content is everywhere, real human presence has quietly become the most powerful advantage you have. Video builds visibility, trust and connection faster than any other format. Which makes the fear of it expensive.

Why are so many smart business owners scared of video?

Why are so many smart and brave business owners terrified of doing video content online? It comes down to human nature. We are all human and we are all scared of rejection. We do not want to be mocked. We do not want to be laughed at, and we do not want people talking negatively about us behind our backs.

It is these fears that keep most business owners paralysed from doing what it takes to make their business, and themselves, visible online. The skill was never the problem.

Why does video matter more in the AI age?

We all know that trust is free falling in this AI age. Everything we read, people assume is just AI generated, non authentic AI slop, if you like.

The antidote to that is to actually be yourself as a human, and to convey that to the people in your network. That is the bit AI cannot do for you, and it is the reason video has gone from nice to have to genuinely valuable.

Why is video so confronting?

The challenge is that there is nowhere to hide when you are on camera. So it is terrifying and it is confronting. And the good or bad thing, depending on how you look at it, is that 99% of people will not do it.

If you can build up the courage to look at a camera, talk to it, and hit the publish button, you are going to have the visibility, and therefore the trust, that your competitors do not.

What is the reward for the 1% who hit record?

In this AI world, I believe it is in person and online video that will make the difference between those who are seen and trusted and hired, versus those who are invisible, disappear, and get no business.

So yes, it is a little bit scary. But you have been in business a long time and you have done much scarier things. It is not actually that terrifying to flick on the camera, hit record, and then publish. The rewards are there for those who are prepared to do it.

A mindset shift that gets you past the fear

A peer in one of my masterminds uses this line with clients who are scared of video. He asks them whether they are really going to go home to their family tonight, look their kids in the eye, and say: kids, I was not brave enough to hit record on the camera today and then publish it to the internet.

Put like that, it stops feeling like a big risk and starts feeling like a small act of courage you can manage today. Find your big boy pants and I will see you online.

Frequently asked questions

Why are business owners scared of making videos?

It comes down to human nature rather than ability. We are all scared of rejection. We do not want to be mocked, laughed at, or talked about negatively behind our backs. Those fears keep most business owners paralysed from making themselves visible online, even when they have plenty to say.

Why is video more important now that AI content is everywhere?

Trust is free falling in the AI age, because people assume most of what they read is AI generated. The antidote is being yourself as a human and conveying that to your network. Video does that faster than any other format, which is exactly why it has become a real advantage.

Does video actually help you win business?

In an AI saturated world, in person contact and online video are what separate the people who are seen, trusted and hired from the people who stay invisible. Video builds visibility and trust, and trust is what leads to being hired.

How do I get over the fear of being on camera?

Start by putting it in proportion. If you have been in business a long time, you have done far scarier things than turning on a camera. It helps to ask yourself whether you are really going to tell your kids you were not brave enough to hit record today. Framed that way, it becomes a small act of courage rather than a big risk.

Do I need good gear or production quality to start?

No. The whole advantage is that you are a real human being rather than polished, generated content. What matters is looking at the camera, talking to it, and hitting publish. Most people never get that far, which is precisely why doing it works.
